FAQs

FAQs
What is the difference between the two categories?
The ReelDance Awards Program showcases chosen finalists of an open submission competition of dancefilm shorts and documentaries from Australia and New Zealand. The General Program is a preselected line up of international works from contemporary dancefilm culture.

In relation to the General Program, what it the curatorial process?
The curator and curatorial consultant receive around 300 submissions from around the world and create 6-8 90 minute programmes based on relevant themes and interest groups, for example Kidreels, Contemporary Dance on Screen, and Dance Documentaries.

Tell me more about the Awards Program?
The team working on ReelDance Awards submissions must consist of Australian and New Zealand residents (in the majority) and the work must have been completed after Jan 1 2006. You can enter any type of short film or video up to a maximum 40mins, or documentaries of any length. Your film will be judged by a panel of dance and film experts, and if it hits the mark it will become part of the festival and will tour nationally.

Is it possible to apply to both the General as well as the ReelDance Awards?
Yes.

If I apply for both categories, do you require another DVD?
Yes, you need to submit a form for General and a form for the Awards along with a DVD for each category.

Is there a submission fee?
No, you do not need to pay us any money.

I want to understand the conditions of entry more: how do you define dance on film?
The film or video must contain, within its main concerns, dance of any description be it human movement, the dance-like movement of inanimate objects, or dance effects achieved through filming or post-production. The ‘dance' element may be apparent in the subject matter which could be a dance performance or a dance-like treatment of everyday gesture, or the filmic treatment - the movement of the camera, movement effects achieved through editing or abstract motion studies/essays.

If my film makes it into the Festival, will I make any money?
There is no cash prize or screening fees for successful finalists in the ReelDance Awards, more importantly your work will receive valuable recognition and gain national exposure as a winning entry in this highly regarded competition. A screening fee of AU$100 will be paid for a single screening of films in the General Program at the Premiere event in May 2008, and further fees for the ReelDance tour.
