Paris is Burning, Jennie Livingstone
DEEP IN VOGUE Program Duration: 3.5 hrs (Double Feature)
An exploration into the evolution of ‘Vogue’ culture from queer ‘balls’ in Harlem in the ‘80’s to Madonna’s Blonde Ambition Tour.
Paris is Burning (USA, 76 mins, 1990) Jennie Livingstone A poignant documentary revealing the community of New York's minority drag queens, gay black and Latino men who cross dress as women and invent the dance style of ‘vogueing’, imitating the fashion poses on the covers of the magazine Vogue. Both an embracing and a refutation of the world of high fashion, the balls become the social focus of this underclass, underground society of outcasts defiantly refusing to be ignored by a world that scorns them.
Winner Best Documentary - Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize 1991
