Tra La La, Magali Charrier Program Duration: 90 minutes Screen dance is an artistic genre where choreography and film reside together. Often stylish and innovative, it crosses the boundaries of artist film and video, avant-garde film, experimental film and contemporary dance, and so appeals to those with an interest in any of these art forms. As a taster of what screen dance has to offer, Forward Motion is an exceptional introduction. Presented by Sophie Travers, it is a collection of outstanding British screen dance films, accompanied by interviews with artists to contextualise their work. A British Council project co-produced with South East Dance, Forward Motion creates a moving snapshot of Britain’s prolific screen dance industry. Screen dance often challenges the notion of what dance is. In some films there is less focus on a traditional dancing body and more on the movement of the camera and the relationship between film and choreography. However, theatrical influences are often evident in the stylishness of the films’ design, costume, set, location and character. Featuring historic, seminal and groundbreaking dance films, Forward Motion brings together both the well-known and experimental rarities, provoking discussion and debate. Sophie Travers is a Melbourne based independent arts producer, working freelance in the performing arts. Sophie's background is in Europe, where she worked as a senior producer for Wayne McGregor's Random Dance and other companies such as Retina, Bi Ma and Green Candle. Prior to moving to Australia she spent three years at The British Council, delivering high profile international exchange and collaboration projects with companies such as DV8, CandoCo, Rambert Dance and The Royal Ballet. Sophie graduated from Cambridge University with first class honours, studied Arts Management at London's City University and has experience on a diverse range of Boards and Advisory Panels. She writes regularly for arts journals including RealTime and Dancing Times. She is on the editorial Board of Dance Theatre Journal. Screening Dates, Locations and Times
